Bei Bei Shuai, a Chinese immigrant living in Indianapolis, is 33 weeks pregnant when the father of her expected child abruptly deserts her. Isolated and profoundly depressed, she ingests rat poison. Friends rush her to the hospital. Bei Bei survives, but her baby, delivered by C-section, does not.

Bei Bei now finds herself charged with murder and attempted feticide, and if convicted, she faces 45 years to life. But she refuses to plea and chooses to fight the charges. Seasoned lawyer Linda Pence takes on the case and battles for her release, eventually securing her bail. But after 435 days in jail, Bei Bei is far from free. Not only is she shackled to a GPS monitor while struggling to keep the small restaurant she owns afloat, but the upcoming trial forces her to relive, over and over, the excruciating loss of her child.

BEI BEI chronicles a case that rapidly becomes a cause célv®bre, attracting wide media and legal attention for exemplifying the criminalization of pregnant women, the treatment of the mentally ill, and the overlooked plight of Asian immigrant women, long considered a "model minority."
