EAT UP documents a yearlong project to improve lunches in Boston Public Schools, where 78% of students are food insecure, and much of the school food they are given is thrown straight into the trash. Jill Shah, an entrepreneur who has built multiple successful companies, recognizes a challenge and jumps in, seeking healthy, fresh alternatives to the vended plastic lunch packs most schools provide. At heart, Jillis a sales and marketing professional, and"winning"is her motivating force; she pushes hard and expects results quickly. But Jill soon realizes that to change the food, she first needs to change the system.

Across the water in East Boston, Cafeteria Manager Jennie Hall runs a tight ship, feeding 1,200 students. But her team laments the fact that so many students arrive at school hungry. Jennie teams up with Jill and BPS Food Services, piloting a project to replace the vended meals with freshly cooked lunches. If they can convince the mayor by year-end to invest in school kitchens, they will be on their way to transforming the system. It's a race against time to prove that our school districts can obey federal guidelines and still serve our children high-quality food.
